Career Long Guidance

Career Long Guidance

Gary and I met in the early 1980s when I was an orthopedic resident.  He started us on the right path to financial planning, beginning with the basics, including life and disability insurance and retirement savings.  As the years went on, he made a number of additional recommendations such as long term care insurance.  In recent years, he emphasized that “retirement is not an event, it is a process”, and we worked with him for about 6- 8 years to prepare for this.  We are now living comfortably and securely in our retirement years.  We will always appreciate what Gary and his team have done to help us reach this stage of our lives.

40 Years of Commitment

My husband and I met Gary Peters in 1983 when he was introduced to us by an orthopedic surgeon associate. I had recently completed radiology training, and my husband was finishing his orthopedic residency. We worked with Gary over the years while we raised our children, moved to a larger home, and led busy lives. Gary helped us at the start getting our insurance and protection in proper order), introductions to an attorney and an accountant, and establishing investments and retirement accounts. Since we are from the same generation, we thought that our financial matters would be in order when we all retired, and the need for any financial planning, advice or coordination would end.

Our finances are in order, but we soon realized that there are still many moving parts in retirement, including updating wills and trusts, regularly having a tax strategy discussion with our accountant, being coached on the best ways to take income in retirement, and being updated regularly on current financial issues. ), introductions to an attorney and an accountant, and establishing investments and savings. The financial decisions that we have to make in retirement are far more complicated than we thought.

Now that Gary is semi-retired, we work with the team he has put into place to continue providing the service and experience we have received over the years.  His son Nick has been our primary advisor for the last three years and it is reassuring to know that we will have someone helping and guiding us for the remainder of our retirement.

Multi-generational Planning

I have been a client of Gary Peters, and now his son Nick for over 25 years. My husband first met Gary when he was a first year attending at MEEI. Gary gave a talk on developing good financial habits to the hospital staff, and my husband was very impressed by Gary and what he heard. We quickly scheduled a meeting with him and Gary then became our financial advisor. Over the years, Gary and his team have worked with many of our family members, including my now adult daughters. Not only has the team advised us exceedingly well, but Gary and Nick have become dear friends.

Eleven years ago, my husband sadly passed away. While he was in the hospital, although he was unresponsive, Gary would visit him frequently, sitting by his bedside. I remain truly touched by this to this day. Following his passing, I was scared and in a fog, but Gary and the team guided me and always took the time to explain things to me in a manner that allowed me to understand without ever being condescending.

Now that Gary is semi-retired, my daughters and I are enjoying working with his son Nick. We had the utmost confidence in Gary during and following a difficult time in our lives, and we continue to have that confidence in Nick!

Challenges with Group Disability

Challenges with Group Disability

Early in my career when I was transitioning from one employer to another, I had the option of continuing a high quality individual disability income policy the employer provided.  I discussed with Gary and told him my new employer provided a substantial amount of group disability coverage.  Gary reviewed all the contracts and recommended that I continue the coverage by paying the premium myself. He had shared that the high quality contract was much different and better than the group, “not all policies are the same”. He also said I could have both policies and potentially collect on both as long as I qualified according to the provisions of each contract. I questioned if I needed all the coverage and Gary said, “There is so no such thing as too much disability income protection. “  I kept the policy even though every time I paid the premium, I said to myself “I’ll never need this.”

Fast forward many years, and I’m in a severe bicycle accident and now disabled. Hopefully it’s temporary, but it might be permanent. I filed claims paperwork for both individual coverage and the group LTD. I was approved for claims payment on the individual high quality policy, but to my surprise declined by the group! I have hired an attorney to contest the denial… who knows?’

Further, I was pleased that I had a benefit on my whole life insurance called “Disability Waiver of Premium” which meant if disabled, the insurance company pays the full premium, and I don’t have to pay while disabled. This is a substantial policy, and I could not continue the payments without this benefit. Now, in another way I am pleased I have all these coverages.

Residency to Retirement

I met Gary Peters in 1983, when I was a chief resident at the old Boston City Hospital. He did a presentation for the residents in our program in developing good financial habits. At the time, I was married, and Gary got Jean and I off on the right path with basic savings and insurance protection. He guided us through our entire careers and all the challenges we faced. Now, 40 years later, Jean is retired and living her dream. She is doing some writing and enjoying time with our daughters and their significant others. I am still living my dream, enjoying life, time with our daughters and working part-time. Their team is now starting to work with our children and their families.

The Peters Group knows their clients and their needs, implicitly.

In my position as a consultant and coach, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with hundreds of the industry’s top advisors and teams, and the competency, professionalism, and commitment to service that the Peters Group brings every day is unique and refreshing.  I have been working with the group for over five years, specifically helping them build out a team of professionals so they are positioned to provide the very best counsel, advice, and client experience today, and for many years to come.

There are a number of attributes that make the Peters Group unique.  First, the Peters Group knows their clients and their needs, implicitly.  Gary and team have been working with medical professionals and their families for decades.  Gary has shared how gratifying it has been to work with some clients from their residency, all the way through to a successful and fulfilling retirement.  The team understands the unique sacrifices physicians have made, and their commitment to patient care and patient outcomes, and the team is focused on being a trusted advisor and invaluable partner.   A second differentiator is the depth of talent in the group, each with complementary strengths in specific areas, enabling them to work seamlessly together to do more for clients and to broaden their impact.  Third, rarely do you see an organization with such a dedicated and experienced group of administrative support team members, with over 60 years of combined service with the Peters Group. A final differentiator is the way that they bring all their experience and expertise together to create a culture of mutual respect, always committed to getting better.  It’s truly gratifying to work with a group of such committed and compassionate professionals.
